Broadway Sings – A Preview

By Annie Lannak
Footlighters’ popular fundraiser BROADWAY SINGS is back for its fourth year in the spotlight. The show debuts on the first weekend in March and has been an audience favorite since its first appearance. I have seen previous shows and had the opportunity to see this one in its final construction phase. Sue Scott, the producer and driving force behind the event was quick to point out that this year’s production was a true collaborative effort with five directors handling different aspects of the event. In addition to herself, other directors include the team of Laura and Keith Clattenburg and two musical directors. In an exchange of roles, the Clattenburgs are helping to engineer this show rather than offering a review of it. Laura explained some of the research she put into this cabaret-style production, determining which songs to present and how to showcase them for best effect. For his part, Keith is used to directing choirs and excited to bring his talents to Broadway tunes. The featured singers selected their own material and will be accompanied by the two musical directors, Gina Diorio and Becky Douglas. Additionally, percussion will be provided by Tom McBride.
Visually, the show is using technology in a new way for Footlighters. There are two screen backdrops that will display digital images in support of each performer. Audience members will enjoy identifying new songs and old favorites. Performers had fun selecting their own costumes and props and thanks to the digital assist, scene changes look like they will move seamlessly from one song to the next. The technical team includes Lee Longenberger and Emily Sturz, with Abby Scott doubling behind the scenes as the Stage Manager.
Your singers for this collaboration will be:
  • Lily Buckley
  • Alexis Costas
  • Melina Cruz
  • Lisa D’Annunzio
  • Becky Ginther
  • Noelle Longenberger
  • Maria McFaulds
  • Katie Pelletier
  • Rob Rinaldo
  • Pete Rolston
  • Carter Ross
  • Jay Schulman
  • Abby Scott
  • Danny Scott
  • Katie Sweeney
  • Sandy Yozviak
As for the program itself, each performer will contribute two songs in addition to an ensemble piece. What’s in the line-up? It would ruin the surprise to reveal all, but I don’t think the audience will be disappointed. Whether you are a fan of Broadway standards or recent Tony winners, this talented group of singers delivers! Okay, here’s a teaser – individual performances include numbers from “The Music Man”, “Waitress”, “The Little Mermaid” and “Evita”. (You recognized at least one of those, didn’t you?) One of the ensemble numbers is a rousing selection from “Hamilton”. When you settle into your seat to enjoy the show, you’ll hear well-performed songs presented by talented singers and musicians. What you won’t see is all the hard work and enthusiasm by the directors, the tech crew, the backstage staff, and the performers themselves cheering each other on. Thanks for coming to BROADWAY SINGS and supporting Footlighters Theater! Sit back and enjoy the show!
